Roblox - Why is it so popular?

What is Roblox about?

Roblox was launched back in 2006 but it has only recently gained a ton lot of popularity among old and new users. Roblox is a gaming platform and marketplace that allows players to play games online. Instead of being an actual game, Roblox is a platform where users may play games created by other people. In a way, it is relatively similar to Steam, but the difference is the users and their ability to create games. This breaks out the basic concept of gaming - you can also try out the other aspect of games by making them. So there are many different games you can play in Roblox; currently, there are tens of millions of games on the platform. Currently, the most played one is called "Adopt me!" and there were 42.1 million daily active users in the first quarter of 2021.

Robux and real money

Roblox contains virtual money called Robux, which can at a certain amount be exchanged for actual money. Anyone can purchase different items etc. on the platform. You have to have at least 100,000 worth of Robux before changing it into real money.

Age-limit policy

As mentioned, everyone can create games. Roblox has a general age limit of 13 years, and users under the age have stricter rules on the platform. One of the stricter rules is that you have to be over 13 to change Robux money into real money.

Even though a popular guideline for gaming, is that kids under a certain age shouldn't be doing it and rather spend their time outside., there are many benefits to this platform being open for younger users. Since Roblox offers the possibility of designing and creating games, it evolves the creative skills of younger users. It goes without saying, that regardless of the platform suing safety measures, there will always be people on the platform with bad intentions. Thus parents are urged to make sure they know what their kids do on the platform.

The chat feature is available for every user, but in this case, users under the age of 13 have a stricter filter on their conversations. All conversations are filtered on the platform, and thus inappropriate language is filtered in the chats into hashtag symbols. However, as today's technology is advanced, these filtered chats get easily bypassed by some, and thus these hashtags won't be working. Thus parents paying attention to their childrens' doings online, is as essential as always.
