Case Studies

1

Goal

Rovio wanted to validate which character art style would work best with their target audience for their upcoming game that was in soft launch.

2

Test Setup

Rovio created 4 new character styles and each character style had its own video featuring a set of screenshots reflecting the specific character style. All other elements remained the same to ensure the reliability of the test data.

These 4 new character styles were then tested against the character style that was used in soft launch to see which style users would prefer.

3

Results

The test results showed that one of the tested character styles increased the downloads by 15% and decreased UA costs by 20% compared to the character set used in the soft launch.

1

Goal

Initially, Roamer Games were planning on launching a strategy game with a mafia theme, but they wanted to make sure the mafia theme was the best choice for their game so they ran a concept validation test on Geeklab’s platform.

Based on competitor and market research, the themes were narrowed down to 4 different themes for the upcoming game (medieval, animal, space and mafia).

2

Test Setup

Roamer Games built 4 different product pages on Geeklab’s platform with each product page featuring a different theme (visualized through the icon and several screenshots).

Each product page was linked to an ad on Meta so that all the people who clicked the ad would land on one of the test product pages. Traffic was then driven to the ad on Meta for 9 days.

After the users clicked download on the test product page, they were informed that the game is still in development and provided with a link to a Discord channel where they could get updates about the upcoming game.

Users were also asked for feedback on their preferences, and they mentioned that they preferred a more realistic or historically accurate strategy game (as opposed to a fantasy game).

3

Results

The test results showed the medieval theme as a clear winner as users were more likely to download the medieval themed product page over the other versions.

The data allowed Roamer Games to ensure that the development decisions for the game reflected the preferences of their target audiences before they even launched the game.

This is a great example of why it’s important to validate concepts and dive into audience insights early on in the development process so different concepts can be measured and validated before the app is launched.
